Aoki very effectively paints the picture of her struggle and the struggle of the Westside in this play. Almost every line of the characters helps deepen their personalities, whether it be their loyalties to their groups, their feelings about others, or their desires in life. She creates nuanced dynamics for not only Brenda but other characters as well (Sherry). Even if never acted out, the script and voice version of the play are enough to catch the sense of true dichotomies that lie within Brenda and the area she comes from. She conveys important topics of socio-economic status, ethnic loyalty, education, etc. through her story and the reader/listener is effectively able to grasp truly at what Aoki wants us too. Overall, this work of art is a very potent piece in terms of getting the reader to reflect on the issues brought up in the play, and it is able to get into and stay in the mind of the reader which in turn can cause us to evaluate our own surroundings the way Brenda does.
